Functional disease is where there is little if any observable medical pathology or where observable medical pathology is insufficient to explain the extent of the symptoms that the patient is experiencing.

In practice it means that once the initial medical history, examination and investigation has been undertaken and appropriate medical therapy instituted little further can be offered to the patient. Functional diseases included a significant amount of the lower back pain experienced by the general population.
